“When everywhere is closed, we are still here.” The importance of foodbanks this winter

Feed My City are a local emergency food charity operating in Manchester, Salford and Trafford, providing ‘simple, vegetarian, nourishing hot food and emergency parcels to those most in need’ around the Manchester areas.

Operating seven days a week between 8am and 9pm, their services are available to multiple organisations including the NHS Care Navigators. They also support the homeless, asylum seekers and housing associations.

Sukhbir Singh, manager of the food bank stated “We have 150 volunteers with a dozen roles that they can do.”

“Without them, we simply could not survive.”

Feed My City value the needs of others and believe that every human being has the right to basic food.

Since 2018, they have delivered over 325,000 hot meals and 12,000 dry food parcels.

“People will either come to collect the food or we will deliver it to them” Singh added.

“The van will go to numerous locations around Greater Manchester, and we’re determined to expand our service a bit more.”

One of the volunteers has been working since June, and feels ‘a real sense of togetherness.’

“You feel a part of something.” the volunteer stated. “There are some great people here, Balbhir, everyone.”

“It interchanges, it’s a busy day.”

The volunteer explained just how lonely life can be for those vulnerable in the city. “December is a month of loneliness, and a lot of people are trying to reach out.”

“I have social values and ideals, I was completely on board with helping out.”

The charity is constantly looking for volunteers. To help out with the charity, or to find out more about what Feed My City do, visit their website. https://feedmycity.org/
