Royton swimming pool welcomes back its swimmers after a £114k revamp

The Oldham based Leisure centre relocated over 1100 users as the pool closed in August for essential maintenance.

The pool reopened its doors on Monday 22 September as club members returned for their first training session back at their own pool.

Failure to the pool tank lining meant water was lost and as a result, the planned improvements began.

A total of £114,000 went into the development with £78,000 dedicated to replacing the tank lining along with new steps installed in the small pool.

Water quality improvement features such as filters, new valves, better water circulation, and new piping, made up £26,000 of the funds.

Finally, energy efficient lighting installed across the pool were a £10,000 investment.

Councillor Petet Dean is confident this new change will improve the leisure centre experience for the community.

He said: “The Royton pool and gymnasium have been operating for some time, being around 12 to 13 years.

“Eventually we saw a deterioration in the pool lining.”

The pool is well used in the Oldham area for the main swimming club ORCA, learn to swim sessions, and visitors.

“We arranged other venues where they could be bussed to because there is a lot of school usage of the pool.”

During the closures users were redirected towards five of the other swimming pools in Oldham .
