Men accused of Rochdale grooming sex offences appear in court as trial begins

The trial of eight men charged with sexual offences against two girls in Rochdale has commenced in Manchester.

The defendants, including two men from Oldham, stand accused of grooming offences allegedly committed between 2001 and 2006.

The accused, aged between 39 and 66, face dozens of charges collectively including those of rape, indecent assault and indecency with a child.

Following jury selection last week, jurors reconvened today at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court to hear the prosecution’s opening statements.

The trial is expected to run up to 12 weeks. Presiding over the case is Judge Jonathan Seely, and the prosecution will be represented by Rossano Scarmardella KC.

The accused include Mohammed Shazad, 43, Nisar Hussain, 43, Mohammed Zahid, 64, Roheez Khan, 39, Naheem Akram, 48, Arfan Khan, 40, Mustaq Ahmed, 66; and Kasir Bashir, 50.

All have entered not guilty pleas on all charges at earlier court hearings.
