The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings for wind, snow and rain across Greater Manchester ahead of Storm Éowyn.

The storm is expected to hit the UK from Thursday (January 23) to Sunday (January 26), with swathes of the country, including large parts of North England, Northern Ireland, North Wales and parts of Scotland, receiving amber weather warnings for Friday (January 24).

There are also yellow weather warnings in place for Thursday and Saturday which cover coastal areas and large parts of Scotland.

The storm, which will move across the North West on Friday, is expected to bring strong winds, disruption to transport, and power cuts.

Mike Silverstone, the Met Office’s Deputy Chief Meteorologist, said: “The strongest wind gusts…could get excess of 80mph, possibly 90mph, which has the potential to cause impacts for those in these areas.”

“There are currently a number of weather warnings in place, with all parts of the UK covered by one warning at some point on Friday.”

In preparation for the storm, the Met Office has recommended that people prepare their property accordingly, checking for loose items and securing them to the ground. Loose items include bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds and fences.

Mark Nash, duty manager at National Highways, advised: “If you’re planning to drive over the next few days, prepare in advance for the journey and take extra care on the roads. If weather conditions become challenging, adjust your driving behaviour to manage the conditions as safely as possible.”
