A waste-free shop is on the rise at the University of Manchester. ‘Want not Waste’ started over 5 years ago with the aim to reduce the amount of wasted packaging used in general shops.
The shop will bulk buy from sustainable wholesale sellers. Students from universities in Greater Manchester can come in with jars and containers, weighing out how much food they want.
It sells food and a variety of household items, including pasta, as well as personal items such as toilet roll and shampoo. Environmental specialists have highly praised the shop as prices are a lot more affordable than normal supermarkets, and affordable for students.
Sophie Teruuchi, a 3rd year bio med student at the University of Manchester works at the shop and described it as a ‘positive place for students and the wider environment’.
