Class of ‘92 Alumni Nicky Butt will step down from his role as CEO at Salford City Football Club with immediate effect.

The club has specified that he will remain an active shareholder and Board Director. A press release from the club stated Butt “has decided that he cannot dedicate the time required to continue as CEO. “

Current Finance Director, Jonathan Jackson will step into the role of interim CEO for the club, who currently sit 16th of the League 2 table.

Following Butt’s departure the club has stated: “Alongside the other members of the Class of 92, Nicky remains committed to continuing the growth of the club that started with their takeover 10 years ago.”

Butt originally joined the backroom of Salford City in 2014, alongside other class of ‘92 alumni  Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Phil Neville and Gary Neville.

He took over the role as Chief Executive from his former Manchester United teammate Gary Neville back in 2022.

After holding the role for two years, Butt spoke on his departure, he said: “Whilst I have enjoyed the day-to-day responsibilities of the Chief Executive role and discovered a huge amount about the challenges an EFL club faces away from the football pitch.

“I have recently realised how much I miss the coaching and development of players, and this has increased my desire to get back into that side of the game.”

He continued: “Over the past few months there have been several exciting opportunities put forward to me that have put my focus back on coaching and on the grass. That being said I have always wanted to put Salford first.

“We now have experienced executives within the senior management team here which means that I can step away from my current duties without any impact on current operations and it will be very much business as usual.”

Big questions remain about what impact this will have on the club, both on and off the field.

The Ammies still have their sights set firmly on rising through the football pyramid, therefore how they recover from this departure is crucial to reaching their long-term ambitions.
