Santander has announced its plans to close 95 UK branches this year with other major banks set to follow in the coming months.
MP, Andrew Western, for Stretford and Urmston said: “I know my constituents have concerns about losing face-to-face banking”,
He has since contacted NatWest who are closing their Trafford Park and Urmston branches on May 20th, 2025.
In their reply NatWest said: “they had taken the decision due to a decline in counter transactions at Urmston and that their review did recommend any new cash services”.
Despite the recent shift towards digital banking, Mr Western is keen to maintain physical banking experiences with many Salford residents relying heavily on the service.
“As digital banking becomes more commonplace, we do still need physical locations. Small businesses need to deposit cash – and people unable to use technology still need access to their money and other banking services.”
The Salford branches which have been announced to shut include:
Halifax, Church Street, Eccles.
NatWest, Third Avenue, Trafford Park.
NatWest, Bank Road, Urmston.
Santander, Flixton Road, Urmston.
Halifax, Bolton Road, Walkden.
To replace these branches, organisations such as LINK and Cash Access UK are aiming to increase availability of banking hubs and deposit services through post offices and Free to use ATMs.
